Eye Movement and Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
EMDR, in short, is a form of trauma treatment that uses bilateral stimulation and involves focusing on a traumatic memory while simultaneously moving their eyes and/or body in a specific way. The goal is to change the way the memory is stored in the brain, reducing the distress it causes on the mind and body.
EMDR is primarily used to treat post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It can also help with other mental health issues that are a result of trauma, abuse and neglect, assault, or military combat, and natural disasters, to name a few.

Bilateral stimulation is present in African and Indigenous cultures, often through practices like drumming and dancing, which are considered effective forms of bilateral stimulation due to the rhythmic, alternating left-right movement they involve.
Understanding the cultural context and incorporating traditional practices can enhance the effectiveness of therapy when working with individuals.
